Those below feel no warmth for those above,
and hearts are quick to scatter and depart;
the one chance is lost in the end—
and a hundred matters all turn to ash.
Interpretation
When those at the top are arrogant and narrow, and those below grow estranged, failure is brought on at the final, crucial moment.
