To cling to high office till your hair turns white—
what, in the end, does all of it avail?
Better, while spirit still remains in you,
to purchase back some true and honest breath.
Interpretation
Those who curry favor with the powerful should turn back—stand upright and start anew as your own person; otherwise you will come to no good end.
